Definitions

  • Cabinet: Cabinet includes the official name for any body of high-ranking advisers roughly comparable to a U.S. Cabinet. Also notes the method for selection of members.
  • Chief of state: The name and title of any person or role roughly equivalent to a U.S. Chief of State. This means the titular leader of the country who represents the state at official and ceremonial functions but may not be involved with the day-to-day activities of the government
  • Elections: Elections includes the nature of election process or accession to power, date of the last election, and date of the next election
  • Head of government: Head of government includes the name and title of the top administrative leader who is designated to manage the day-to-day activities of the government. For example, in the UK, the monarch is the chief of state, and the prime minister is the head of government. In the US, the president is both the chief of state and the head of government.

A note <a href=/cat/Government>government</a> coalition - <a href=/encyclopedia/The-Liberal-Party-(UK)><a href=/encyclopedia/The-Liberal-Party-(UK)>Liberal Party</a></a> and National Party following a <a href=/cat/Military>military</a> takeover on 12 October 1999, Chief of <a href=/kp/Army>Army</a> Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Pervez MUSHARRAF, suspended Pakistan's <a href=/graph-T/gov_con>constitution</a> and assumed the additional title of Chief Executive; exercising the powers of the head of the <a href=/cat/Government>government</a>, he appointed an eight-member <a href=/encyclopedia/United-States-National-Security-Council><a href=/encyclopedia/United-States-National-Security-Council>National Security Council</a></a> to function as Pakistan's supreme governing body; on 12 May 2000, Pakistan's <a href=/kp/Supreme+Court><a href=/encyclopedia/Supreme-Court-of-the-United-States>Supreme Court</a></a> unanimously validated the October 1999 <a href=/encyclopedia/coup-d'état><a href=/encyclopedia/coup-d'état>coup</a></a> and granted MUSHARRAF executive and legislative authority for three years from the <a href=/encyclopedia/coup-d'état><a href=/encyclopedia/coup-d'état>coup</a></a> date; on 20 June 2001, MUSHARRAF named himself as <a href=/kp/president>president</a> and was sworn in, replacing Mohammad Rafiq TARAR; in a referendum held on 30 April 2002, MUSHARRAF's presidency was extended by five more years
