Suchita Vemuri, Staff Editor

Author: Suchita Vemuri, Staff Editor

Many other countries face problems at the other end of the spectrum, having an increasing proportion of young people below 24. This profile has its own attendant set of development issues and problems.

What are the development implications of having a younger population?
Governments would need to budget for education and related social infrastructure accordingly. In poorer countries, unemployment rates may rise, aggravating social tensions; in addition, fertility and birth rates may go up, requiring relevant planning to address related issues, such as teenage pregnancy.
DEFINITION: Population, total refers to the total population.

The world passed a milestone on June 16, 1999, when its population touched six billion. India and China alone accounted for close to a third of this total. Though population growth remains a serious development issue, the Malthusian theory of arithmetic growth in resources and geometric population growth resulting in poverty and unsustainable lifestyles has been modified to include political, technological and economic systems being more decisive factors.

The greater development issue for many countries is the profile of their populations. Many countries are increasingly graying, with a growing proportion of populations over 64.

What are the problems of an aging population?
Governments would need to increase budgets for healthcare, live-in institutions and other support systems for the aged, even as production is likely to be impacted by a proportionately smaller working population.

Hmmm... Maybe it's not so smart to go to third world countries, fix their health problems and feed them. We are creating a much bigger problem that no one will be able to fix. Just a thought, instead of giving them food, health care maybe we should just give them advice (you need to have less babies) and if they take it, they'll be ok. If not, then the natural food supply will take its course.

There are more pyramids in Sudan (south of Egypt ) than in Egypt combined. But because of its lack of modern conveniences not many tourists have visited it. The oldest pyramids head back all the way to eighth century B.C. It\'s a shame they have to be forgotten.

In many countries in Southern Africa, the main reason for the difference between the estimated population and the real one is the massive number of deaths due to AIDS. But that\'s not the case in Brazil.
The numbers of persons with HIV or AIDS in that huge country are much much lower than in any of the African Sub-Saharan countries, lower even than in some European countries.
The number of deaths because of AIDS is stable now, for the last six years. Deaths due to reasons like car accidents and heart attacks, are 5 times more numerous than those caused by AIDS in Brazil.
The main reason for the low profile of AIDS is that the government is obligated by law to give free medicine to AIDS and HIV patients every week, as well as free medical and psychological counselling services. This is the Brazilian government\'s site on AIDS: http://www.aids.gov.br
