Countries where people report a high level of trust for others also consider themselves to be happy and satisfied with their lives.

Oddly enough these countries also have a high total crime rate. This anomaly can be partially explained by their typically high level of confidence in their police and legal system which means crime is more likely to be reported.

DEFINITION: Percentage in 1990s surveys agreeing that people can be trusted.

Kind of surprising to see France at the bottom of the list. I stayed in a hostel in California for a few nights and a French guy in one of the bunks always left his MacBook and digital SLR out on the bed unattended all day. That seems incredibly trusting to me- I can't see too many Americans doing that.

It would be nice to see this broken down by gender too. Do people trust women more than they do males? Do males trust women more then they do males themselves? From some studies I have seen, most trust women more and they trust males the least. Makes me think even the males know they can count on women more than they can each other and even though they will not admit it, they do realize that women are superior in most ways over the males. After all, we do tend to trust a superior product over an inferior one.
