The ruling party of Togo won more than two-thirds of the seats in parliamentary during the 2013 elections. Opposition parties hoped to win the parliamentary majority required to push through reforms to curb the power of one the oldest political dynasties in the African continent. President Faure Gnassingbe's family has ruled Togo for almost 50 years. Nevertheless, the ruling UNIR party obtained 62 out of 91 seats in the single-chamber body. The 10 opposition parties, which tried to push for a two-term limit on the presidency barring the President to run for re-election in 2015, only got 25 seats.

In terms of economy, the growth rate decreased slightly in 2013 to an estimated 5.6 percent from 5.9 percent in 2012. However, this is projected to go up by six percent in 2014 and 6.3 percent in 2015. Government reforms in 2013 and the creation of the Togolese revenue office helped administration officials to work towards this end. The government is also looking forward to clean up the business environment that blocks entrepreneurship and property ownership.

Togo plans to depend on the advantages of the local extractive industry. The processing plants as well as port and transport services hope to get the most out of global value chains. The 5.6 percent growth in 2013 was brought about by the impressive performance of the primary sectors. These are cotton and food crops along with services such as retail, transport and storage, and communications. Continuing public investment and a boost to the cotton and phosphate sectors are expected to sustain growth, projected at six percent in 2014.
