Xinjiang on Han language literally means „new frontier“. Since 1949 Xinjiang has been a part of Uighur Autonomous Region of PR of China, and it lays in the country’s far northwest. Xinjiang is China’s largest administrative region. It spans more than 1.6 million sq km and it is almost similar in size with its north-eastern neighbour Mongolia.

Demographically, with its 21.8 million citizens, it is more likely the same size of its north-western neighbour Kazakhstan’s 17.7 million citizens and also sparsely populated with its 13/sq km.

For centuries, Xinjiang is home of the large ethnic Uyghur Muslim population of about 45%, yet still there are almost the same percentage of Han Chinese of about more than 40% which maintains a growing trend. The relations between two communities, particularly in recent times, were not always the best, which was caused by Uighur’s sense of unequal opportunities and marginalization which produced tensions that tend to escalate even very far from Xinjiang in the form of terrorist attacks like that of Kunming (Yunan province) and also before that, in Chinese capital of Beijing.

Under "population density>people per sq km" it states that there are 139.87 people per sq meter, when it should say 139.87 people per square kilometer. This typo should be addressed and corrected whenever possible. (Asia>China>Geography)
